Framer vs Webflow, and when custom code is the better call

Framer vs Webflow comes down to who edits the site and how much content it holds. Pick Framer for a design led site your marketers edit on a canvas. Pick Webflow for larger CMS limits, ecommerce or a code export. Pick custom code when the site needs logins or app data. Gr8r Studio builds on Framer, Webflow and custom code.

What each costs to run

All three are paid by plan, not by us. We do not list figures here; check each official pricing page for the current plan.

  • Framer: Free, Basic, Pro and Enterprise site plans, plus paid editor seats and add ons for localization, pages, CMS and hosting [1].
  • Webflow: Basic and Premium site plans, separate Ecommerce plans, a Localize add on and paid Workspace plans [2]. Team and Enterprise plans are sales led.
  • Custom code: Next.js and Astro are open source. Hosting and the CMS are chosen and paid separately.

Our view

We build on Framer, Webflow and custom code, so we pick by what your site has to do. If you already have a working site and only need small edits, a freelancer or your own marketer is the cheaper choice. If you want a platform we do not build on, we are the wrong team, and we will say so. Clients own everything once it's paid for.

What we have built on each

  • Savari (savari.io): For Savari, we designed and built the website in Framer.
  • Orthotropic (orthotropicbd.com): We designed and built the Orthotropic website in Webflow.
  • Astro: We also build custom coded sites, for example in Astro.

50+ projects shipped across product design, engineering and websites.

Moving between them

Moving platforms is mostly a job of mapping every old URL to a new one and redirecting each one. Leaving Webflow takes care, because Webflow's own pricing page is unclear on CMS export, so confirm it before you rely on it (Webflow pricing, checked 26 Oct 2026). See website migrations and Webflow to Framer.

Decision flow: a design led site your marketing team edits on a canvas points to Framer, a content heavy site needing larger CMS limits, ecommerce or a code export points to Webflow, and a site needing product logic, logins, app data or code you fully own points to custom code in Next.js or Astro.

Questions

Is Framer better than Webflow?

Neither wins for every site. Framer suits a design led site that marketers edit on a canvas, with up to 10 CMS collections on Pro. Webflow suits content heavy sites, with up to 40 collections and 20,000 items on Premium, plus ecommerce plans and code export on paid Workspace plans.

Is Framer better than Webflow for a startup site?

For many early startup sites, Framer is the quicker fit: one hosted tool where designers and marketers change pages in place. Webflow fits better once the blog, the catalogue or the team grows past Framer's plan limits, or when you need ecommerce. Check both pricing pages before you commit, since plans change.

Which is better for SEO, Framer or Webflow?

Both give you the basics. Framer Pro includes site redirects. Webflow adds localized SEO through its Localize add on. Rankings depend more on your content, your site structure and clean redirects than on the platform. Custom code gives full control of markup and schema, if you have engineers to use it.

Can I export my site's code?

Webflow exports code on paid Workspace plans, but Webflow's own pricing page is unclear on CMS export, so confirm it before you rely on it; forms stop working and code cannot be reimported. Framer's help pages disagree on HTML export, so plan as if Framer has no editable code export.

When should a startup skip both and use custom code?

When the site needs product logic, logins, app data or code you fully own, and you have engineers to keep it running. Astro suits content driven sites. Next.js suits sites that share logic with your product. Both are open source; you choose and pay for hosting and any CMS yourself.

Can we move from Webflow to Framer, or to custom code, without losing rankings?

Usually, if you plan it. Map every old URL to its new one, add a server side 301 redirect for each one that changes, carry over titles and metas, and watch Search Console after launch. Leaving Webflow takes extra care, because Webflow's own pricing page is unclear on CMS export, so confirm it before you rely on it.
