Design agency or engineering partner: design files, or a working product?
A SaaS design agency hands you design files, and your engineers build them. An engineering partner like Gr8r Studio designs the product and builds it with the same team. Choose a design agency or subscription if engineers are waiting for files. Choose a partner if nobody owns the gap between the Figma file and the code.

Who we are: Gr8r Studio is a Digital Product & AI Engineering Partner for Ambitious Businesses: 15+ team members, in house & remote, founded 2023, with 50+ projects shipped across product design, engineering and websites.
Picture a handoff. A screen looks right in the design tool and then loses its spacing, states or logic on the way to code.
A design agency stops at the file. A design subscription works one request at a time. Both can be the right call, if your engineers are ready to take the file from there.
Side by side
| Design agency or subscription | Gr8r Studio | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | Designers; a subscription works through a request queue | 15+ team members, in house & remote: product designers, engineers and web developers on one team |
| Time to start | After a proposal, or after sign up for a subscription | A 30 minute call, then a written scope; first concept within 48 hours of kickoff, a revised draft by day 2 to 3 |
| Range of skills | Design; engineering is often a second vendor | Product design, engineering, websites and AI Automation in one team |
| Design to working code | Design files; your engineers or another vendor build them | Designed and built by the same team |
| Your management load | Medium: you run the handover to engineering | One scope, one team, one contact |
| Single person risk | Designer rotation between accounts or requests | A team with shared files and a design system |
| Who owns files and code | Per contract | Clients own everything once it's paid for. |
| Cost model | Project fees, retainers, or a flat monthly fee, busy or not | Scoped project, agreed in writing before work starts |
| Time to first output | After a proposal, or per request on a subscription | Set in the written scope |
| Who maintains it after launch | Your engineers build and maintain it | Support after launch is set in the written scope |
| Where the risk sits | In the handover from design file to code | With one team that answers for design and build |
| Best for | Design files for a team that already builds | One defined product, flow or site, designed and built by a date |

The verdict
- Choose a design agency if you have engineers ready and need finished design files.
- Choose a design subscription if you have a steady queue of small design tasks and one request at a time suits you.
- Choose Gr8r if you want the product designed and built by the same people, so screens and code stay in step.

Choose a design agency or design subscription if
- Your engineers are strong and only need design files.
- You have a steady flow of small design requests, one at a time.
- You need brand or campaign work rather than a product.
Choose Gr8r if
- You want design and engineering from the same team.
- You need one defined product, flow or site, built by a date.
- You want a design system your engineers and AI coding tools can follow.

A common starting point: a marketing site for a SaaS product.
The service behind this page: product design.
When we're the wrong choice
- You have a steady trickle of small requests. A subscription suits that better.
- You only need brand or campaign design with no build.

Our view
We ask who will turn the design into code. If you already have strong engineers waiting for files, a design agency or subscription is the simpler buy, and we would point you there. If nobody owns that step, we design and build together. We are the wrong choice when you only need a queue of small design tasks.

Questions
Does a design agency also build the product?
Some do, many do not. A classic design agency delivers Figma files, a prototype and a design system, then your engineers build it. Ask early who writes the code. If the answer is your team, plan for the handover. If you want one team for both, look for a design and engineering partner.
What is the difference between a design only agency and a design and build partner?
A design only agency ends at the design file. A design and build partner carries the same screens into working code and ships them. The difference shows up when something changes: with one team, design and code change together, and nobody has to translate between two vendors.
When does a design subscription make more sense than a scoped project?
A design subscription makes sense when you have a steady flow of small tasks, like ads, banners or one screen at a time, and a monthly rhythm suits you. A scoped project makes more sense for one larger outcome, like a product or a site, that needs a plan and a date.
What does an engineering partner like Gr8r do that a design agency does not?
We design the product and build it with the same team. The people who drew the screens also see them run in code, so states, edge cases and the design system match what ships. A design agency usually stops at the file and hands the build to someone else.
Can you work with designs from another agency?
Yes. We can take finished designs, check them for missing states and gaps, and build from them. We will tell you early if something in the file will not work in code, so the fix happens in design before it becomes a delay in engineering.
Design agency vs development agency: which one does a SaaS product need?
A design agency shapes the brand, flows and screens, then hands files to engineers. A development agency builds from a finished design. A SaaS product needs both skills, and the handover between two firms is where time is often lost. A design and build partner keeps both skills in one team.
Who would own the files and code at the end?
Clients own everything once it's paid for. Ask any agency or subscription the same question before you sign. Keep the Figma files, the code and the accounts in your company's name from day one, so the next team can open them without asking anyone for access.
