AI development agency vs in house team: hire, or bring in a partner?
Hire in house when you need product or AI work every day for years and someone to manage it. Bring in an AI development agency or partner like Gr8r Studio when a defined product, flow or system must ship before a hire could start. Many teams do both: partner first, hire second.

Who we are: Gr8r Studio is a Digital Product & AI Engineering Partner for Ambitious Businesses: 15+ team members, in house & remote, founded 2023, with 50+ projects shipped across product design, engineering and websites.
A hire is a bet on the long term. The person learns your product, your users and your team, and that knowledge stays with you. The cost is time: writing the role, finding the person, waiting out their notice and then managing them.
A partner is a bet on a defined outcome. A team that has done the work before ships one product, flow or system, and leaves files your team can carry on with.

The verdict
- Choose an in house team if AI or product work fills every week for years and someone can lead it.
- Choose an AI development agency or partner if one product, flow or system must ship before a hire could start.
- Choose Gr8r if you want the first version and its design system built now, then handed to the team you hire.

When we're the wrong choice
- You need one person full time for years and have someone to manage them. Hire.
- Your work is a steady stream of small changes with no end date.

Using both
Many teams bring in a partner first and hire second. The partner ships the first version and the design system; the hire inherits files, rules and a product that already works.

Our view
We look at the calendar first. If the work runs every day with no end date, a hire is the better long term choice and we will say so. If the product has to be live before a role could be filled, we build it, document it and hand it over. We are the wrong choice as a permanent replacement for a team.

Questions
Should we build an in house AI team or outsource?
Build in house when AI work will fill every week for years and someone can lead it. Outsource to a partner when you need one product or feature shipped before a team could be hired. Many companies outsource the first version, then hire people to run and grow it.
Is it cheaper to outsource AI development?
It depends on how long the work lasts. A hire carries salary, recruiting, tools and management time every month. A partner charges for a scoped project with an end. For a short, defined build, a partner often costs less overall. For years of daily work, a hire usually does.
When is an in house product designer better than an agency?
An in house designer is better when you need design every day, want product knowledge to stay inside the company, and have someone to manage the role. An agency or partner fits a defined piece of work, like a first version or a design system, that has to ship soon.
Can a partner hand the work over to our future hires?
Yes, and it should. Ask for the design system, the code, the docs and the logins in your own accounts. A good handover means your first hire inherits rules and a working product instead of a blank page. Plan a short handover call into the written scope.
How long does it take to hire versus bring in a partner?
Hiring takes as long as writing the role, interviewing and waiting out notice. A partner starts after a 30 minute call and a written scope. If the product has a launch date, compare that date with your hiring calendar before you choose. That gap often decides it.
When should a startup outsource software development?
Outsource when the work is a project with a clear goal and a date, and hiring would take longer than the work itself. It also helps before you know which roles you need full time. Keep it in house when the product is your core and you need the same people on it every day for years.
Who would own the files and code at the end?
Clients own everything once it's paid for. With an in house team, the company owns the work as the employer. With a partner, put ownership in writing before work starts, and keep every repository, design file and account in your company's name from day one.
