Framer vs Astro: canvas editing or a site you own as code

Framer vs Astro: ask who changes the site every week. If designers and marketers do, on a canvas, pick Framer. If developers do, in a repo you own, pick Astro, which is built for content driven sites and renders on the server first. Gr8r Studio compares both here from official docs.

What each costs to run

We do not list figures here; plans change, so check each official page.

  • Framer: Basic, Pro and Enterprise site plans, billed per site, plus paid editor and content editor seats and add ons [1].
  • Astro: you choose and pay for the host [3] and any headless CMS [2].

Our view

Pick by who edits the site. If you have a working Framer site and only need new pages, a rebuild in code is not worth it yet. If nobody on your side will own the code after launch, Astro is the wrong pick, and we will say so. Clients own everything once it's paid for.

What we have built

  • Savari (savari.io): For Savari, we designed and built the website in Framer.
  • Astro: We also build custom coded sites, for example in Astro.
  • Glaze (getgradients.com): A gradient engine that runs in the browser. Built by Gr8r for its own portfolio. Not client work.

Moving between them

Framer's two help pages, both updated 15 Sep 2026, disagree on export, so plan as if there is no editable code export 7] [8]. Moving to Astro is a rebuild. Map every URL and redirect each one that changes. See [website migrations.

Questions

Is Framer or Astro better for a marketing site?

Framer suits a design led marketing site that designers and marketers edit on a canvas, with hosting included. Astro suits a content site kept as code in a repo you own, with the host and CMS you choose. Pick by who will make changes each week and who keeps it running.

Can marketers edit an Astro site?

Yes, if you connect a headless CMS. Astro takes content from files or a CMS, and its docs include guides such as one for WordPress. Editors then work in the CMS while developers own the layout. Without a CMS, every change goes through a developer and a code deploy.

Framer or code for a startup site?

Many early startup sites do well on Framer: one hosted tool, quick to change, with no code to maintain. Move to code, such as Astro, when you need a repo you own, content beyond Framer's CMS limits, or engineers already run your stack and want the site beside it.

Can I move a Framer site to Astro?

Plan for a rebuild. Framer's help pages disagree on export: one says there is no HTML export for self hosting, another says published files can be downloaded. Either way you rebuild the pages in Astro, move content into files or a CMS, and redirect every changed URL with a 301.

Is Framer or Astro better for SEO?

Both can rank. Framer Pro includes site redirects and hosts pages on 300+ locations. Astro renders on the server first and gives developers full control of markup and schema. Rankings depend more on content, site structure and clean redirects than on the tool you choose.

What does each cost to run?

Framer charges a plan per site, plus paid editor seats and add ons, listed on its pricing page. Astro is open source, so you choose and pay for a host and any headless CMS. With code, the developer time to keep the site running is often the larger cost.
