## Why a design system matters

Without one, every new screen reinvents buttons, forms and spacing. Products drift, accessibility slips and engineering time goes on rebuilding the same parts.

A design system gives designers and developers one source of truth.

## How a design system works

It starts with tokens for colour, type and spacing. These feed components such as buttons, inputs, tables and dialogs, each with documented states and rules.

For AI products, it also covers patterns like loading, low-confidence and review states.

## Common design system mistakes

Building a huge library before the product needs it. Letting design files and code drift apart. Having no owner, so the system goes stale.

Once more than one designer or team is building screens, or the product has enough repeated patterns that inconsistency starts to show.
- Is a UI kit the same as a design system?
No. A UI kit is a set of visual components. A design system adds coded components, rules, documentation and ownership.
