# Next.js vs WordPress, or both with headless WordPress

Next.js vs WordPress has three answers. Keep classic WordPress if your editors live in its dashboard. Build in Next.js if the site needs app logic and engineers own it. Use both, with WordPress as a headless CMS, if editors and engineers each need their own tool. Gr8r Studio compares them from official docs.

## Choose Next.js if

- The site needs app logic, logins or APIs.
- Your engineers want the site in their own repo.
- You plan to use a headless CMS, possibly WordPress itself.

## Choose WordPress if

- Your editors live in the WordPress dashboard.
- You have no engineers to own a code site.
- Your site is mostly posts and pages.

From the Choose lists on this page. Checked 26 Oct 2026.

## The verdict

- **Choose Next.js if** the site needs app logic, logins or product data, and engineers will own it.
- **Choose WordPress if** your editors live in its dashboard and the site is mostly content.
- **Choose headless WordPress if** editors need the dashboard and engineers need their own frontend.
- **Choose Gr8r if** you want one team to design the site and build it in code.

## What each costs to run

We do not list figures here; plans change, so check each official page.

- **Next.js:** you choose and pay for the host \[5\] and any headless CMS \[3\].
- **WordPress:** the software is open source \[2\]. Self hosting means paying for hosting yourself; hosted plans are listed on WordPress.com \[7\].

## Our view

We build custom coded sites, and we do not look after WordPress installs. If your WordPress site works and your editors are happy, keep it. If nobody on your side can run a Next.js site after launch and you do not want a support plan, a hosted builder or WordPress is the safer choice. Clients own everything once it's paid for.

## Moving between them

Moving from WordPress to Next.js can keep WordPress as the CMS through its REST API [4\], or move content to files. Either way, map and redirect every changed URL. See \[website migrations](https://gr8rstudio.com/migrations).

## Questions

### Should I use Next.js or WordPress?

Use WordPress if your editors live in its dashboard and the site is mostly content. Use Next.js if the site needs app logic, logins or product data and engineers will own it. Use both, with WordPress as a headless CMS, when editors and engineers each need their own tool.

### Can I keep WordPress as the CMS with Next.js?

Yes. WordPress can act as a headless CMS through its REST API, and a Next.js frontend reads content from it. Editors keep the dashboard they know, and engineers own the frontend code. You then run two systems, so plan who maintains each one after launch.

### Is headless WordPress worth it?

It is worth it when editors need the WordPress dashboard and the frontend needs app logic that a theme cannot give. It costs more to run, because you maintain WordPress and a separate frontend. For a simple content site, classic WordPress is usually enough and much cheaper to keep.

### Is Next.js or WordPress better for SEO?

Neither wins by default. Next.js gives engineers full control of markup, rendering and schema. WordPress gives editors control through themes and plugins. Rankings depend on content, structure and clean redirects. A move between them can keep rankings if every changed URL gets a 301 redirect.

### Who maintains a Next.js site?

Your engineers, or a team you hire. Next.js runs as a Node.js server, a Docker container, a static export or through adapters, and someone has to own that setup, the updates and the CMS. If nobody on your team writes code, WordPress or a hosted builder is safer.

### Will I lose SEO moving to Next.js?

Not if you plan the move. Map every old URL to its new one, add a server side 301 redirect for each one that changes, carry over titles and metas, and watch Search Console after launch. Most ranking drops after a move trace back to missing redirects.
