# Next.js vs Framer, and when a builder site should become code

Next.js vs Framer: stay on Framer while your marketers edit the site on a canvas and the CMS fits its plan limits. Move to Next.js when the site needs product data, logins or code you own, and engineers can run it. Gr8r Studio compares them here from official docs.

## Choose Next.js if

- The site needs product data, logins or APIs.
- Your engineers want the site in the same repo as the product.
- You need content beyond Framer's CMS limits.
- You have engineers who will keep it running.

## Choose Framer if

- Your marketing team edits pages every week.
- Design and motion lead the site.
- The CMS fits within Framer's plan limits \[2\].
- You want to launch without engineers.

From the Choose lists on this page. Checked 26 Oct 2026.

## The verdict

- **Choose Next.js if** the site needs product data, logins or app logic, and engineers will own the code.
- **Choose Framer if** marketers edit a design led site on a canvas and the CMS fits the plan.
- **Choose Gr8r if** you want one team to design the site and build it in Framer now, or in code when it needs to grow.

From The verdict on this page. Checked 26 Oct 2026.

## What each costs to run

We do not list figures here; plans change, so check each official page.

- **Next.js:** you choose and pay for the host \[4\] and any headless CMS \[1\].
- **Framer:** Basic, Pro and Enterprise site plans, billed per site, plus paid editor and content editor seats and add ons \[2\].

## Our view

We often keep startups on Framer longer than they expect, because a rebuild in code costs time and needs people to run it. If your Framer site works and only needs new pages, you do not need us for a migration. If you need a large engineering team for a full app, a bigger firm may suit you better. Clients own everything once it's paid for.

## What we have built

- **Savari** ([savari.io](https://savari.io)): For Savari, we designed and built the website in Framer.
- **Contrail** ([flights-gr8r.vercel.app](https://flights-gr8r.vercel.app)): Book a flight and pick your seat inside a 3D cabin. Built by Gr8r for its own portfolio. Not client work.

50+ projects shipped across product design, engineering and websites.

## Framer vs custom code

Framer suits a marketing site your team edits in a visual editor, within Framer's plan limits \[2\]. Custom code suits a site that needs its own logins, data or app logic, and it needs engineers to keep it running. The table above sets out the details.

## Moving between them

Moving from Framer to Next.js is a rebuild, since Framer's two help pages, both updated 15 Sep 2026, disagree on export, so plan as if there is no editable code export [7\] \[8\]. Map every URL first and redirect each one that changes. See \[website migrations](https://gr8rstudio.com/migrations).

## Questions

### Can I move a Framer site to Next.js?

Yes, but it is a rebuild. Plan as if Framer has no editable code export, so the pages are rebuilt in code and the content moves to files or a headless CMS. Map every URL first, redirect each one that changes with a server side 301, and carry over titles and metas.

### Will marketers still be able to edit after moving to Next.js?

Yes, if you add a headless CMS. Next.js takes content from files or a CMS of your choice, and editors work in that CMS instead of a canvas. Without a CMS, every text change goes through a developer, which slows a marketing team down quickly.

### Is Next.js better for SEO than Framer?

Not by default. Framer Pro includes site redirects, and a well built Framer site can rank. Next.js gives full control of markup and schema, which helps when engineers will use it. Content, site structure and clean redirects matter more for rankings than the choice of tool.

### Framer vs custom code: when should a Framer site move to code?

Move when the site needs product data, logins or app logic, when it outgrows Framer's CMS plan limits, or when you need code you own in your own repository. Stay while marketers edit on the canvas, the CMS fits and the site does its job well.

### Can a Framer site scale?

For a marketing site, often yes. Framer Pro hosts on 300+ locations, and add ons raise CMS limits up to 40 collections and 40,000 items. It stops being the right tool when the site needs to behave like an app, with logins, user data or custom backend logic.

### What does it cost to run each?

Framer charges a plan per site, plus paid editor seats and add ons, listed on its pricing page. Next.js is open source, so you choose and pay for the host and any headless CMS. With code you also pay engineers to keep it running, which is often the larger cost.
